Millport Reservoir Algae 2003

Samples collected during the MSc Biology of Water Resource Management Field course, May 2003

Millport formerly had 2 reservoirs to supply its water: we sampled the lower one (left in the photograph).
Samples of the plankton were taken with a net, also of the periphyton by brushing a stone,
and picked by finger from the spillway (see next image).
There was a heavy growth of periphytic algae in the spillway.
The species of algae found can be a useful indicator of water quality.

Conductivity = 220ÁS, pH = 7.4

TYPES: BG=blue-green; C=chlorophyte; Df=dinoflagellate; Dia=diatom; Des=desmid; R=rhodophyte
