Scientific Methods

Aims:

To provide MSc and PhD students with an understanding of the theoretical basis of science and to train them in the general skills needed for a scientific research project.

Module content:

Philosophy of science, the nature of the literature, and scientific method including survey and experimental strategies and the need for replication and controls.

Ethical issues in scientific research.

Making and peer-refereeing a research proposal.

Statistical and related methods (including simple modelling) for analysing data, and software tools.

Reporting the analysis of data.

Participate in departmental research seminars.
