Freshwater Ecosystems

Aims:

1. To provide an understanding of freshwater ecosystems and the causes, effects, assessment and control of pollution, enrichment and eutrophication in these systems.

2. To develop skills in field and laboratory studies of freshwater ecosystems and in the critical evaluation and reporting of such studies

Module Content:

The ecology of freshwater ecosystems and factors affecting the distribution of taxa in riverine and lacustrine ecosystems.

The use of biota and biotic indices to assess water quality.

Stratification and flushing in lakes, and special aspects of nutrient cycling in freshwaters.
